This epic Bertolucci film follows the birth and growth of Fascism, Mussolini and his opposition in Italy from 1900-1945. It is demonstrated by the lives of one land-owning family and their peasant workers and summed up in the friendship between rich Alfredo and poor Olmo who were born on the same day. As they get older the injustices of life become clearer and their friendship is put to the test.
